End of Term Wrap!

We've had a very busy Term 1, have a look and see what we have been up to!

Year 1 – Room 1 & Room 2

The Year 1 students of Room 1 and Room 2 combined forces for a massive Easter egg hunt. Each egg found, contained a Maths problem that needed to be solved!

The Year 1 students also undertook a Writing activity (with a side of Maths). The activity tasked them with applying for the arduous job of Easter Bunny. The students had to count their number of hops on one leg and then come to the leap measuring station to find out how long they could jump. All very important criteria if one wishes to become the Easter Bunny!

Year 2 - Room 3

The Year 2 students in Room 3 rehearsed an Easter play in Reading. The students then made props and masks during Art which were used in their performances.

Year 2 - Room 4

The Year 2 students in Room 4 have been very busy constructing a boat or floating device. Their creations had to be both waterproof and able to hold weight.

Year 3 - Room 6

In Art this term, Room 6 explored and practiced drawing plants and flowers that are indigenous to Western Australia. They learnt that native plants are all from Australia, but plants can be indigenous to a particular part of Australia as well. The students practiced drawing the Jarrah tree, the Balga (grass tree), the Blue Leschenaultia, the Bottlebrush, the Bull Banksia, and the Kangaroo Paw as contour drawings and detailed drawings. They then chose their favourite plant and drew a larger picture of it, using their practice drawings for reference. Next, the students outlined and coloured their pictures in crayon, then painted the background in Edicol dye.

Year 3/4 – Room 7

The Year 3/4 students from Room 7 have worked very hard on their Animal Collage Face projects in Art.

Year 4 – Room 9

The Year 4 students in Room 9 have been exploring the First Fleet in HASS and the students have drawn their own ships as well as working on a cardboard model of their own which they are in the process of covering in Papier-mâché before they add the sails and paint them. They learnt cardboard attachment techniques before they began construction.

Year 4 - Room 10

The Year 4 students in Room 10 have worked hard on their Art this term.

Year 6 – Room 14 & Room 15

This term in History, the Year 6 students have been exploring the road from colonial Australia to Federation. This included examining, very critically, the arguments for and against federating Australia. Their final ‘speaking’ assessment for the term was a debate. Following the standard debate format, students formed teams of three speakers and delivered well thought out debates that were both emotive and persuasive in delivery.

HEC Interschool Swimming Carnival

Earlier in the term, selected students participated in the HEC Interschool Swimming Carnival.

Congratulations to the swimming squad, especially to medal recipients.

Hallie Rana – Year 4 Runner Up Champion Girl
Milla Paget – Year 5 Champion Girl
Joseph Stirk – Year 5 Champion Boy
Olivia Wilson – Year 6 Runner Up Champion Girl

STEM Club

STEM Club started later in the term, so as a mini unit of work, the students were tasked with inventing something useful that could be used by someone they know. The ‘hook’ (introduction into a lesson/unit of work that grabs the students' attention) was to look at a range of ‘useless’ inventions, which included a USB pet rock, shoe umbrellas and the butter stick. Many students disagreed that the butter stick was useless, so in the last STEM Club session, they got the opportunity to prove Miss L wrong and make one with repurposed glue sticks.

Please note, no buttered toast was consumed during the making of the butter stick.

One of the Year 6 students valued the inventions so strongly, he wrote an ode to the humble butter stick.
